About Hickory Golf Days

Hickory Golf Days was conceived after visiting Kingarrock Golf Course in Scotland, where play is only allowed with hickory shafted clubs.  The experience of playing with hickory shafted clubs that were
80 to 100 years old, combined with modern reproductions of rubber mesh balls of the period was an experience I will never forget.

Forming Hickory Golf Days means I can give club golfers up and down the country the same unique experience at their own golf club, for a truly unforgettable day.

Golf societies looking for an away day with a difference will give the members the opportunity of playing golf from a bygone age.

For the ultimate corporate golf event;  give your clients and guests the opportunity of playing with hickory shafted golf clubs.  An event that will totally eclipse any previous corporate golf days.

To enter into the spirit of the day players are encouraged to dress in period clothing making great photo opportunities for all  players on the day.

Hickory Golf Days provide prizes for various competitions during the day (including best dressed player).

David Rose (owner of Hickory Golf Days) will be in attendance at all events and can offer advice on the various playing formats that are suitable for hickory play.  He can answer questions regarding the clubs, the history of the game and help with the prize giving ceremony.
Stephen Barker (Professional Hickory player) is also available for an additional fee of £20 per player.
He can provide a pre-match clinic, play one or two holes with each group and offer mid-round tips to each player.

My love affair with the game of golf started at an early age. I have been a member at four golf clubs: Ilford GC, West Essex GC, Ely City GC and
St Andrews GC.
I have played to a reasonable standard (still looking for my first level par round, having played three courses in one over par) and had one hole in one.
I have never owned a cavity back iron, always preferring the feel and playing characteristics of blades.
I have been fortunate enough to work in the golf industry since 1988 forming my company
VIP Golf Wholesale.  We supply PGA professionals in London and East Anglia with Club Crested clothing and associated products.
My early heroes were Nicklaus, Palmer, Player and Ballesteros but I always, had an incredible fascination with golfing legends from a bygone age.  Old Tom Morris, Young Tom Morris, James Braid, J.H.Taylor, Harry Vardon, Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen and the golfing genius that was Bobby Jones.
In 1930 he achieved a golfing record that had never occurred before and almost certainly will never be repeated again.  He won  the US Amateur,  US Open, British Amateur and the Open Championship in the same year.  In recognition of this incredible event his achievement was named
The Impregnable Quadralateral.

My professional career started in 1989 as first assistant at Burghley Park GC in Lincolnshire, where under the guidance of Glenn Davies I developed an interest in golf's rich history and traditions.  I soon amassed a large collection of books on the history of golf and discovered the thrill of playing with Hickory clubs.
Once fully qualified I took up Head Professional positions at golf clubs in Worcestershire, Devon and Hertfordshire before becoming Head Professional at the prestigious Royal Worlington & Newmarket GC in Suffolk. This was the perfect setting to develop my skills with Hickory clubs where several of the members were also members of The British Golf Collectors Society.  During this time I was golf coach to the Cambridge University squads.
I am now proud to be Head Professional at
Ash Valley GC in Hertfordshire together with my faithful companion "Arnie" (my Jack Russell who makes the golf course his second home).
I am helping to develop the golf course itself and the growth of the game for the members and visitors.
